Word to Markdown Converter
Turn a Word document into Markdown you can commit, diff and publish. Heading levels, emphasis, lists, GFM tables and links come out clean — no HTML soup.
Drag and drop a .docx, .docm, .dotx or .dotm file here
or click to browse — up to 20 MB on desktop, 10 MB on mobile
No file selected
- GitHub-flavored Markdown with heading levels, lists, bold, italic and tables.
- Links as Markdown — [text](url) instead of Word field codes.
- A rendered preview and a source tab so you can check the .md before downloading.
- UTF-8 output that keeps curly quotes and non-Latin scripts intact.
Images become Markdown image links to a placeholder image, and Word-specific layout such as text boxes or columns is not reconstructed. Deeply nested lists may be flattened.
The .docx is parsed locally. Nothing is uploaded, and the Markdown is generated in this tab.

The basics
What is Word to Markdown conversion?
Markdown is plain text with a small set of structural symbols. It is what Git, static site generators and note apps read best. Word is a rich document format, so conversion means mapping Word's paragraph styles and runs back to Markdown syntax.
This converter reads the .docx in your browser and emits GFM-compatible Markdown: headings, bold and italic, bulleted and numbered lists, pipe tables and inline links. The result can be committed to a repository, pasted into Obsidian or fed to Hugo, Jekyll or Docusaurus.
Best for workflows like:
- • Moving a Word draft into a Git-based documentation repo
- • Importing a manuscript into Obsidian, Notion or Logseq
- • Preparing content for Hugo, Jekyll, Astro or Docusaurus
- • Turning meeting notes into a README or wiki page
- • Archiving a document in a diff-friendly format
Three steps
How to convert Word to Markdown
Drop the .docx
Choose a .docx, .docm, .dotx or .dotm file. The whole document is read locally in the browser.
Check the Markdown
The preview shows how the document reads; the Markdown tab shows the exact syntax, including tables and links.
Copy or download
Copy the Markdown into your editor, or download a .md file ready to commit.
What comes out
How each Word element becomes Markdown
The converter follows the structures Markdown can express. Everything else is reduced to plain text.
| In Word | In the Markdown | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Heading 1–6 | # to ###### | Heading level is preserved, not clamped |
| Bold, italic | **bold**, *italic* | Nested emphasis is kept |
| Bulleted lists | - item | Consecutive items become one list |
| Numbered lists | 1. item | Numbering restarts per list |
| Tables | GFM pipe table | Merged cells are expanded to a grid |
| Hyperlinks | [text](url) | External targets preserved |
| Images | | Position kept, original file not embedded |
| Page breaks, headers, footers | Removed | Markdown has no pages |

Answers
Word to Markdown FAQ
Is this Word to Markdown converter free?
Yes. There is no account, watermark or per-file limit.
Is my .docx uploaded to a server?
No. The .docx is unzipped and parsed inside your browser tab; nothing is uploaded or stored.
Does it keep headings and formatting?
Heading 1–6, bold, italic, bulleted and numbered lists, tables and links are converted. Fonts, colours, page layout and text boxes are not part of Markdown and are dropped.
Are Word tables converted properly?
Yes. Tables become GFM pipe tables. Merged cells are expanded into an even grid so the columns stay aligned.
What happens to images?
Images become links so their position is visible. Replace the placeholder URL with your own image after pasting the Markdown.
Are nested lists preserved?
Lists are grouped by type. Very deep nesting may be flattened because Word stores list depth differently from Markdown indentation.
Can I edit the Markdown before downloading?
You can copy the generated Markdown into any editor and change it there. The downloaded .md is a starting point, not a locked file.
What is the file size limit?
Up to 20 MB on desktop and 10 MB on mobile. Very large documents take longer because the whole file is parsed on your device.
